Second Cuts
When shearing, the goal is to remove the fiber with one blow cutting as close to the skin as possible. This minimizes time shearing and preserves the staple length of the fiber. Sometimes, shearers will have to make a “second cut” meaning the fiber is now split into pieces.
During the skirting process, all of the “second cuts”, or smaller splices are shaken out of the larger fleece so that the fleece can be labeled as longer staple length.
